DOE Launches New Critical Materials Hub
The Department of Energy (DOE) has announced it will invest $120 million over five years in a new critical materials hub, its fifth energy hub.
This hub will focus multidisciplinary research on critical materials such as rare earths, which are crucial for a growing number of energy technologies and face supply disruptions.
According to the DOE, the hub’s research will aim to advance U.S. leadership in energy-related manufacturing, including the production of electric vehicles, wind turbines, efficient lights, and other products.
The hub will build on the DOE’s 2011 Critical Materials Strategy report, which addresses the use of rare earths and other critical materials in clean energy components, products, and processes.
