MoneyTree: Cleantech’s Big Decline in Q3

With cleantech venture investing shifting to smaller, more capital-efficient deals, the sector saw a big drop in terms of dollars invested in Q3: only $791m flowed in during that period, versus $991m in Q2, according to the MoneyTree report.  The number of cleantech deals, 58, was virtually unchanged.  Overall, venture firms invested $6.5 billion in 890 deals in Q3, down 11% in terms of dollars and 5% in terms of deals from Q2.  The number of deals was down 11% from Q3 ’11.

According to another survey produced by Dow Jones VentureSource, the number of venture investments in U.S.-based companies dropped 32 percent in dollars and 9 percent in deals in Q3 compared to the same quarter last year.
